When talking about ninjas most people will instantly think of silent but deadly people dressed head to toe in black. Ninjatown however is the totally opposite and is based on the plush toys by Shawnimals. It’s a fun little game with cute animations and very simple storyline
The main storyline is that Ninjatown is under attack from Mr Demon and his army of "Wee Devils". The aim of the game is to then protect Ninjatown from Mr Demons army. You play as Ol' Master Ninja and have to place buildings that will provide a level of defence from the oncoming waves of Wee Devils. Defeating each Wee Devil gives you cookies which you can then use to build more defences.
As you progress through the levels you get introduced to new types of ninjas some good some bad. From the caffeine powered Business Ninja to the smoothie making Forest Ninja. You get given melee and ranged ninjas so you have a good choice when planning out your defences. As you get more cookies you can upgrade your defences to make your ninjas stronger and have more health. This is a must on some levels as the vast number of wee devils unleashed can overpower your ninjas.
Ninjatown utilises both DS screens pretty well. The top screen shows an overview of the map allowing you to see where Wee Devils will be entering and where they will be trying to get too. The touch screen allows you to use the stylus to select where to build ninja huts or to use Ol' Master Ninja's powers.
Even if you are not into strategy games this is still a fun game to play, each map lasts around 10 minutes so you’re not stuck on each level for hours. The perfect balance of enemies makes it more interesting as you have to decide whether to add new buildings or upgrade existing ones. Making decisions too late can ultimately cause you to lose the level however this then allows you to use a better strategy next time around. What makes this interesting is that the last strategy may not work on the following level making you constantly have to think.
If single player wasn’t enough fun for you the multiplayer mode allows you to play with a friend, with or without owning another copy of the game. Each player has to defend their own map like single player. If you both have the game you have 9 maps to play from and 3 if you just have the single cartridge. The aim is the same as the single player, be the first to defeat the waves of Wee Devils.
